Stevenson University's adult undergraduate and graduate programs provide nursing students with a career-focused education taught by accomplished faculty with extensive, real-world experience. Designed for working nurses, the School of Graduate and Professional Studies programs offer online and hybrid courses with multiple start dates. Nursing students have the opportunity to begin studies when they are ready and can choose the course schedule that works best for them.

The Future of Nursing

According to the Atlantic's article, The U.S. Is Running Out of Nurses, “Around a million registered nurses are currently older than 50, meaning one-third of the current nursing workforce will reach retirement age in the next 10 to 15 years.” Stevenson University is positioned to prepare the next generation of nurses to fulfill the 1.2 million registered nurses vacancies that will occur by 2022, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Combating the impending nurse shortage requires preparing nurses at the undergraduate level as well as the graduate level. Nurse educators, leaders, and managers are vital to replenishing the significant number of nurses that will retire. According to a 2014-2015 report by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, “Almost two-thirds of the nursing schools responding to the survey pointed to faculty shortages as a reason for not accepting all qualified applicants into baccalaureate programs.”

Success Story

Alumna Shelia Murphy is a model representative of the quality education offered at Stevenson's School of Graduate and Professional Studies. Earlier this year, Baltimore Magazine recognized Shelia as a Top Nurse for her efforts as Assistant Nursing Professor at Anne Arundel Community College. Selected by a panel of registered nurse advisors, Shelia was one of 55 exceptional nurses chosen from a pool of hundreds of nominees. Additionally, she was recently appointed to the Maryland Board of Nursing.

Shelia's journey at the School of Graduate and Professional Studies began with her desire to complete her RN to BS degree. She notes, “The knowledge I gained at the bachelor's level significantly improved the care I gave to my patients. To this day, I still go out into the community and collaborate with people and nurses to form valuable connections.” Shelia returned to Stevenson to earn her master's in Nursing. She says, “Teaching was always my passion; it's in my heart. After graduating, I was immediately prepared to teach the next generation of nurses and able to easily transition into a nurse educator position because of the amazing professors I had as role models.”
